Dr. Austin Hill - Harford Community College

Harford County Business Talks #7 – Dr. Austin Hill

Dr. Austin Hill, Ed.D, a champion for Harford County, is leading the charge for students entering the workforce by trailblazing a path for their success.

The goal: BRIDGING PEOPLE TOGETHER.

Dr. Hill is the Career and Jobs Navigator for Harford Community College, focusing on creating an accessible bridge between the students and businesses in Harford County. Dr. Hill is also the lead for the Academy of Finance at Edgewood Highschool – an award-winning program that guides students to college and career readiness.

With Dr. Hill’s guidance, the program has seen tremendous success and growth, with over 94% of seniors in the program graduating with their national certification.

Scott Elliot, Vice President at Harford Bank, introduced us at an Edgewood High event last year, and since that time, his passion and drive have been very inspiring. He has introduced high school seniors looking to get into the insurance field straight out of high school – which I think is a wonderful thing! This idea goes beyond just insurance. He has helped students get into the automotive industry with a partnership with Thompson Automotive – and hopefully many more to come!

Students need to be aware of the opportunities in Harford County. That is what Dr. Hill is hyper-focused on: connecting students with workforce opportunities – during and after high school.

What if we could create an atmosphere in the county where students clearly understand their options – aside from the conventional 4-year degree? Many students are coming out of high school in Harford County, who are smart, honest, and ready to work in Harford County, right now.

Here is the issue: many of these students see working at “BIG-BOX” stores and companies as their only option. Are there other options for them? Local companies? Career driven opportunities in local small businesses? I think so – and that is the goal.

Harford Community College and the public high schools want this open network of communication between their students and local business. I like the idea a lot – but it will take work and conversation on all sides – so if you’re a business owner – and are looking to foster a local talent pool of the next generation – here is the path.

I believe workforce development, on a grassroots level, is a great way to spearhead a lot of issues in Harford County sustainably – so please, reach out to Dr. Hill and see if you have the resources/connections to help.
